Circular Bay Window - exterior of house

When it comes to measuring your bay windows for curtain tracks, even the more intricate circular bay windows can be easily tackled with the right approach. If you're looking for a new curtain track and need guidance on taking measurements for your round bay, we've got you covered. Follow these simple instructions to ensure a perfect fit.

Step 1 – Elevate Yourself

Before you start measuring, ensure you can reach the height where the curtains will be fixed. Since bay windows might not have perfectly straight walls at floor level, it's best to work at the curtain's intended height. Use a sturdy step ladder or enlist the help of someone tall to ensure accuracy and safety.

Step 2 – Measure the Width

Begin the measuring process by measuring across the bay from corner to corner in a straight line (A to C). This measurement will give you the width of your bay window.

Step 3 – Measure at Right Angles

Next, find the center point of your A to C line (D) and measure from there to the middle of the curved wall (B). You may want to mark point B with a drawing pin or Blu-Tack to reference it later. This measurement determines the depth of your bay window.

Step 4 – Double Checking

Though the two measurements from Step 2 and Step 3 are sufficient for creating the curved curtain track or pole, it's recommended to take some extra measurements to double-check and ensure a perfect fit.

Take measurements from the corners of the bay to the center of the curve (A to B and B to C). Don't fret if these measurements aren't identical; the design can still be adapted accordingly.

Step 4 – Optional: Reverse Bends

If you desire curtain rods to start and end at points A and C, the measurements from previous steps will suffice. However, for a unique touch, consider 'reverse bends,' where the pole turns a corner and comes out of the bay.

In this case, measure from points A and C to where you want the track to end (1 to A and 2 to C).

Step 5 – Consider Brackets

While you've gathered all the measurements needed to shape your bay window curtain pole, it's essential to decide how you intend to fix it in place. If you plan to 'face fix' the pole (attaching it to the wall), make an allowance for brackets to ensure a proper fit.

Alternatively, if you prefer a top-fixed track (attached to the ceiling), specify the distance you want it to be from the wall.

For curtain tracks with reverse bends, you can even use a combination of both top and face fix brackets for added stability.
