Elegant living room with full-height curtains hanging from a discreet ceiling-mounted curtain track beside a large window.

A ceiling-mounted curtain track can be a beautifully discreet way to dress a window. By taking the track up to the ceiling, curtains can create a clean, uninterrupted line that works particularly well with full-height curtains, large windows, bay windows and contemporary interiors. But choosing the right ceiling track is not simply a matter of deciding where you want it fixed.

The weight of your curtains, the shape of the window, how you want the curtains to operate and whether you are considering Wave curtains can all influence which system is most suitable.

There is also an important difference between a curtain track that is fixed directly to the ceiling and a fully recessed curtain track.

This guide explains the main options, the questions worth considering before you order and some Silent Gliss systems that may be suitable for different requirements.

If you are just starting your search, our made-to-measure curtain tracks are a good place to begin.

Quick guide: which ceiling curtain track might suit you?

There is no single ceiling-mounted curtain track that is right for every window, but the table below gives you a useful starting point.

Silent Gliss categorises its tracks by operational type and curtain requirement rather than treating all ceiling-mounted systems as interchangeable.

If you are unsure, the most useful starting points are:

Requirement Silent Gliss system to consider Why consider it?

Silent Gliss categorises its tracks by operational type and curtain requirement rather than treating all ceiling-mounted systems as interchangeable.

If you are unsure, the most useful starting points are:

  • How heavy are the curtains?
  • How wide is the window?
  • Is the track straight or shaped?
  • Do you want hand, corded or motorised operation?
  • Are you using Wave curtains?
  • Do you want the track visible or recessed?

Those answers will usually narrow the options considerably.

Are ceiling-mounted tracks suitable for heavy curtains?

They can be, but ceiling mounting alone does not determine whether a track is suitable for heavy curtains.

The track system itself, the curtain weight, the length and shape of the installation and the fixing arrangement all need to be considered.

Silent Gliss, for example, categorises the 6840 as a medium-to-large hand-operated system, while its corded range includes different systems for increasing curtain weights and track lengths.

This is why we would always recommend choosing the system around the curtains rather than choosing a track purely because you like its profile.

It is also where specialist advice can be particularly helpful. Heavy lined or interlined curtains place very different demands on a track from lightweight curtains.

One customer who purchased tracks from The Curtain Pole & Track Company while refurbishing a period property told us:

“I have hung very heavy, interlined curtains on these tracks and they slide back and forth easily with no issues.”

The same reviewer explained that their windows were different shapes and sizes and required custom track lengths.

If you are working with particularly substantial curtains, take a look at our curtain tracks for heavy curtains or speak to us before ordering so that the system can be matched to the installation.

Can a ceiling track be bent around a bay window?

Yes, provided you choose a system that is designed to be bent.

This is an important distinction because not every curtain track should automatically be assumed to be suitable for a bay.

Several ceiling-fix Silent Gliss systems are designed to be bent to fit your specific measurment to your window, including the Silent Gliss 1025, 1280, 6010, 6840, 3840 and 3900.

A made-to-measure track can therefore be an excellent solution for a bay where you want the curtains to follow the shape of the window rather than using several separate straight tracks.

This is also where accurate measurements matter.

Our made-to-measure bay window tracks are supported by professional bending services and excellent craftsmanship. When you submit your measurements, our team checks them before the track is made. If something does not look quite right, we will contact you and ask you to double-check it.

We are confident enough in our measuring and bending process that if your made-to-measure bay track arrives and does not fit, we will replace it free of charge, even if you made a mistake with your measurements.

That reassurance can make a considerable difference if you have an awkward or complicated bay.

One customer described how the team contacted them after they submitted measurements for a complicated bay window:

“We appreciate the company emailing us after we submitted our measurements for a complicated bay window and double-checking that the numbers and window shape made sense before confirming our order.”

They went on to say that the installation was as straightforward as possible.

Can Wave curtains be used with ceiling-mounted tracks?

Yes, provided you choose a ceiling track that is compatible with the Wave system.

Again, Wave compatibility should not be assumed simply because a track can be ceiling fixed.

For example:

Silent Gliss Metropole Range, decorative pole that performs as a track,  ceiling or wall fixed, bendable and Wave-compatible. Also available in a motorised option.

Silent Gliss 6840 is a medium-to-large system offering ceiling or wall fixing, bending and Wave compatibility.

Silent Gliss 3840 provides cord operation alongside ceiling or wall fixing, bending and Wave compatibility.

Wave curtains create their characteristic even folds through the relationship between the curtain heading, gliders and track system, so the complete arrangement needs to be considered together.

If this is the finish you are looking for, our Wave curtain tracks and Wave curtains guides will help you understand the different options.

Can you have a ceiling-mounted double curtain track?

Yes. A double-track arrangement can be ceiling mounted where the chosen track system and installation are suitable.

A double arrangement may be useful where you want two separate curtain layers, but it is important to allow sufficient spacing between the tracks so that each layer can move correctly without interfering with the other.

The exact arrangement will depend on the curtains, heading style, track system and space available at the ceiling.

Because these requirements can vary considerably, this is one area where we would recommend discussing the project with our team rather than selecting two tracks independently and assuming they will work together.

You can also explore our double curtain track systems if you already know you need two curtain layers.

What is the difference between ceiling-fixed and recessed curtain tracks?

Although the finished effect can look similar, ceiling-fixed and recessed tracks are not the same thing.

Ceiling-fixed curtain tracks

A standard ceiling-fixed curtain track is attached directly to the ceiling.

The track itself remains visible, although a slim profile can create a very discreet appearance.

This is often a straightforward option for existing rooms because the track is installed onto the finished ceiling.

Recessed curtain tracks

A recessed curtain track is designed to sit within the ceiling or within a dedicated recess profile.

The intention is to integrate the track more closely into the architecture so that the curtain appears to fall from the ceiling itself.

Silent Gliss offers two approaches.

The Silent Gliss 6243 is a directly fixed recessed system intended for lighter curtain requirements. For medium and heavier applications, Silent Gliss recommends dedicated recess-profile systems, including the 6870 or the Bradbury Double Track for hand operation, the 3870 and 3970 for cord operation (althought we dont have these online, please speak to our team if you think this is what your are after) and the 5600 for motorised curtains.

Recessed systems therefore need more consideration at the planning stage than a conventional ceiling-fixed track.

This is especially important if you are renovating or building, as the recess and track need to be considered together rather than treating the curtain track as an item to add at the very end.

Take a look at our recessed curtain tracks if this is the finish you want to achieve.

Can recessed ceiling tracks be curved?

They can, but this needs to be planned carefully.

Silent Gliss offers that its recessed curtain-track systems can be bent, but recessed systems cannot be bent byt hand on site, this need to happen at the ordering stage

That makes accurate dimensions particularly important for a recessed bay or curved installation.

If you are considering a recessed track for an unusual window, we would strongly recommend discussing the layout with our team before before the ceiling work is completed.

How do I choose the right ceiling-mounted curtain track?

Rather than starting with a particular model number, work through the installation in this order.

1. Consider your curtain weight

Lightweight curtains and heavy interlined curtains do not require the same track.

The track should be selected around the curtain requirement rather than simply choosing the smallest or most discreet profile.

2. Decide how you want the curtains to operate

Would you prefer:

  • hand operation
  • cord operation
  • motorised operation

Each can lead you towards a different track system.

For difficult-to-reach windows, very large curtains or simply greater convenience, you may also want to explore electric curtain tracks.

3. Look at the shape of the window

A straight window gives you the widest choice.

A bay, curved wall or unusual shape requires a track specifically suitable for bending.

Our made-to-measure curtain tracks are particularly useful where a standard straight track will not suit the window.

4. Decide whether you want Wave curtains

If so, choose a track that is specifically Wave-compatible rather than assuming all Silent Gliss tracks can be used with Wave.

5. Decide whether you need one or two tracks

If you are planning two curtain layers, consider this from the beginning so that the spacing and fixing arrangement can be planned correctly.

6. Choose between ceiling fixed and recessed

If you simply want the curtain track mounted at ceiling height, a ceiling-fixed system may be all you need.

If you want the track integrated into the ceiling, investigate a recessed system before completing your ceiling work.

7. Think about the fixing surface

A curtain track is only as successful as its installation.

Before ordering, consider where the track will be fixed and whether the fixing surface is appropriate for the weight of the curtains and chosen track system.

If you are uncertain, it is much better to ask before ordering than try to solve a fixing problem once the track has arrived.

Which ceiling curtain track should I choose?

For a straightforward ceiling-mounted track, systems such as the Silent Gliss 1025 (for very light weight fabrics such as voiles or 6010 may be worth considering.

For larger hand-operated applications, the Silent Gliss 6840 or 1280 may be more appropriate.

If you prefer cord operation, the Silent Gliss 3840 and 3900 provide ceiling-fix options.

Wave users should concentrate on systems specifically offering Wave compatibility, such as the Metropole Range, 6840 and 3840.

And if the aim is a truly integrated ceiling finish, look at a purpose-designed recessed curtain track rather than assuming that any standard ceiling track can simply be hidden.

The most important point is that there isn't one “best” ceiling mounted curtain track.

The right choice depends on your room, curtains, window and how you want everything to work together.

If you have a straightforward window, our curtain tracks category is a good place to start. If you have a bay window, particularly heavy curtains, a recessed installation or another less conventional requirement, speak to our team. We can help you narrow down the options before your track is made.
